What to do when kids’ pricey holiday wishes exceed your budget

Mon, 2024-12-09 06:00
Q: As our boys have got bigger, so too have their Christmas wishes. Now that they are both teenagers, their wishes are at a whole new level. Our youngest son would like a new video game console, controllers, and games. One of his older brothers is wishing for a new laptop with specifications we’ve never heard of so that he can game with his younger brother. And our oldest son would like help buying new tires for his truck. We always try to fulfil at least some of their wishes, along with a family ski trip over New Year’s to make Christmas and the holidays memorable. It’s not that we’re behind with our budget or that we finance extravagant lifestyles for our boys, but the wishes this year caught us by surprise. We could afford them with effort this one time, but we’re wondering if we want to because then next year might feel like a letdown. How can we deal with this without ruining Christmas for our kids? ~Sebastian Read More

Wine Guy: 3 festive reds to bring on the holiday circuit

Thu, 2024-12-05 11:00
There’s no more denying the arrival of the holiday season. I’ve already faced Whamageddon, the other day unexpectedly walking into a store cheerfully blaring Last Christmas. So let’s get on with — and into — it, time to tackle pairing wines with the holiday season. This week we start with a trio of reds, all versatile and cheery. They’ll fare well when brought along on the open house circuit, they’re ready to take on a wide array of meals, and they’ll even meet most budgets for those office Secret Santa festivities — or simply make a great bottled gift.
