Travel chaos on returning to Canada
Public
Across this morning’s National Post front page is emblazoned a headline and picture of travel chaos at Pearson International. This is amplified by several articles on the inside. Our return trajectory from Heathrow to Vancouver via Calgary on June 9th was simply awful. Westjet left London an hour late, which, combined with the delays caused by idiotic government policies on arrival, made us miss our connection to Vancouver.
Open letter to the President and President Elect of the CMA

Dear Dr. Smart and Dr. Lafontaine,
Firstly, let us congratulate you, Dr. Smart, on your advocacy for Canadians and Canadian physicians over the past year. You have spoken well and kindly, placing the issues besetting health care in Canada before Canadians and the Federal government with admirable clarity.
And having known you for many years Dr. Lafontaine, we have great confidence that you will continue this essential advocacy.
Canadian Medical Association 2022 AGM is fast approaching
Public
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) 2022 AGM is fast approaching. It is to be a virtual event held on Sunday, August 21. There is still time to register until Tuesday, August 16.
What will this year's AGM be like? There have been several posts and comments by physician colleagues on the pages of Doclounge sharing thoughts on issues pertaining to the CMA and the upcoming AGM. Does the Annual Report lack important details? Why are there no detailed minutes from the last AGM for review and approval? Are new proposed Bylaw changes good or bad and why so little discussion?
Larry saves the Canadian healthcare system - a musical satire
Public
Dr D. Naismith, Vernon BC, Jun 22, 2022
This is an enjoyable musical satire. Each episode is five minutes or so and covers different aspects of the healthcare system from the crisis in lack of family doctors to overcrowded emergency departments, patients in hallways and more. An interesting take on the Canadian healthcare system problems and the production is well done judging from the first four episodes released.
We are in grave danger, we have taken people out of the picture.
Public
Dr Z. Essak, MD - Vancouver, BC - October 17, 2022
It’s about learning, knowledge, sharing and understanding so we can make our society and the world better.
We are in grave danger. Soon those with memories of how things were different will be gone. We will be left at risk of believing the way we do things is the only way.
We have taken people out of the picture. We have become leaders of entities, not leaders of people.
What do Family Doctors do?
Public
Dr Carmen Eadie, Vancouver BC, Sep 4, 2022.
The biggest problem with being a Family Doctor is that no one knows exactly what we do. We are involved in so many aspects of a person’s life that the lens is not clear to other people.
Are band-aids the right Rx to save family medicine?
Public
The $118 million announced consisting of $75 million new money plus redistribution of existing funds as a "stabilization fund" is an interim measure, a one-time handout over 4 months October 2022 to Jan. 31st, 2023, to help family physicians (FP) in the community, both longitudinal practices and walk-in clinics with overhead costs to keep their doors open until January 2023. This first step is intended to buy more time for the government and DoBC to develop a "new payment model" that will be introduced and implemented. According to DoBC President's letter, the new model will be based on compensation determined by a number of factors including time, patient encounters, and attachments/complexity.
CMA - 3 - 2021 AGM
Public
As the CMA AGM for 2022 is upcoming shortly, .....
I have been trying to recall the events of the AGM from last year. (I have to record this for myself, otherwise I can't remember - everything seems to take 10 minutes to come out of long-term storage these days.) Here it is - a long wade if you are interested. I may have remembered incorrectly or inadvertently made errors - corrections and comments are welcome.

CMA - 2 - 2022 pre-AGM Information Session
Public
The AGM of the CMA is Sunday Aug 21st. I guess we are all not concerned about meetings on Sunday anymore.
I thought I'd try to prepare myself this year, hence I signed up for one of two "CMA's pre-Annual General Meeting (AGM) information sessions" 90 minutes on a Monday afternoon. About 2 pages of attendees (? 50 people) of whom many appeared to be CMA staff and board. Chair was a CMA staffer who did a much better job than the physician chair of the 2021 AGM.
