Excerpt from Rueters:

'The Edge, lead guitarist with the Irish band U2, has become the first rock star to play in the Sistine Chapel, a venue he described as "the most beautiful parish hall in the world".

The performer, whose real name is David Evans, sang four songs on Saturday night for about 200 doctors, researchers and philanthropists who attended a conference at the Vatican on regenerative medicine called Cellular Horizons.

CMA PRESIDENT ELECT

15 JANUARY 2015

Good Morning, I hope you are well. We are all aware of the politics of medicine in Canada and I believe the CMA could be crucial to the future of the profession for several reasons I won't elaborate here.

As you know it is BC's turn to select the next President of the CMA, and DoBC sent a message this morning asking members to vote on line for the candidate of their choice between 16 January - 23 February 2015.

Wang v BC Medical Association Judgment Released March 8, 2013
Public

2013-04-05 Vancouver, BC – Z. Essak,

Almost a month has passed since the Judgment Wang v BC Medical Association was released on March 8, 2013. The day the Judgment was released the BCMA Board was in session. The BCMA Board will be meeting again on Saturday April 6, 2013.

The Judgment comes a little more than a year after the 24 days at Trial from January 23 to February 24, 2012 and five years have elapsed since the President’s Letter of February 2, 2008.

Some doctors are saying maybe the Judgment could have been more even-handed in it’s delivery. Some doctors are saying “Dr Wang won but she doesn’t get any relief”. Some doctors are saying “it’s a partial victory” and some doctors are saying “it’s a huge win”.

What has emerged from the Judgment?

Is the CPSBC requirement for drivers licence information really necessary?
Public

Fingerprints_taken_by_William_James_Herschel_1859-1860_cropped.jpgThe College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC) licence renewal for 2014 includes a new requirement that doctors provide their drivers licence information to the College.

Many doctors have contacted the College with concern about this further intrusion into their personal privacy rights. The College has responded that it is required as part of the criminal records check that all practitioners must consent to.

This was explored further through conversations with the CPSBC staff and with staff at the Ministry of Justice.

Is it really necessary for doctors to provide their drivers licence information for a criminal records check? The short answer is no. For more details read on.

BC Medical Association does NOT want members to attend the AGM on June 1st.
Public

Pan Pacific Hotel, Vancouver, BCVancouver, BC - May 31, 2013 - Z. Essak

On June 1, 2013 the BC Medical Association will hold its Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, BC at the Pan Pacific Hotel. This is an opportunity for doctors across British Columbia to provide input and to ask important questions of their leadership.

Why then, would the “Platinum Sponsor” for this event, the Canadian Medical Association, schedule a conference on the same date and time as the BCMA AGM?

In fact, the BCMA is sponsoring doctors to attend the other conference instead of coming to the AGM.

Dr. Zafar Essak asks, “Why doesn't the BCMA want their members to attend the AGM? What have they got to hide? Is it because they don’t want to answer difficult questions from the members?”

Physicians providing front line care know where to find efficiencies and know how to make the health care system more effective with better patient outcomes. The problem is, they cannot speak out on your behalf without facing court actions by the Ministry of Health and being sued by their own Health Authorities.

Urgent need to revise the BC Society Act highlighted by BC Court of Appeal decision
Public

Vancouver, B.C. February 7, 2010.

In what many will view as a technical legal ruling, the BC Court of Appeal decision (January 29, 2010) in Wang v. British Columbia Medical Association (2010 BCCA 43) highlights for the public and members of the BCMA that the BC Society Act is urgently in need of revision.

Fortunately, review of the BC Society Act is currently underway.  It was announced on December 17, 2009 and the BC Government is seeking feedback with a deadline of April 1, 2010.  Related BC Government documents state the BC Society Act has not been significantly revised since 1977 and "is outdated and in need of revision".  http://www.fin.gov.bc.ca/society_act_review.htm

Grassroots BC doctors launch petition for BCMA to stop further punitive legal action against Dr Caroline Wang
Public

Grassroots BC doctors launched a petition for the BCMA to stop further punitive legal actions against Dr. Caroline Wang available online at http://bcdoctors.org and in one week over 180 doctors have signed the petition.

Doctors are being urged to sign the petition, to speak out at the BCMA AGM on May 31, to share the information with their colleagues to stop this injustice.

Some doctors have also added comments to the petition, "Given the context of the Wang story, the chilling effect is absolute".

BCMA election turnout worst ever
Public

Other doctors have said, "Truly pathetic turnout. Hard for me to fathom." and "I cannot believe, this must be lowest count, Wonder why?"

Some of the older doctors and past-presidents will remember Ben Trevino's prescription for a successful BCMA  was  "triple  P", i.e.  the relationship between the  profession, the public and the politician - individually and collectively - in BC.
