The Free Software movement reaches thirty years, why is it so important?
Public
Thirty years ago in September 1983 Richard Stallman launched the campaign for freedom in computing, for software to be free. He is the founder and president of the Free Software Foundation (fsf.org), pioneer of the concept of copyleft and the main author of the GNU General Public License, the most widely used free software license.
He writes, "Non-free software makes users surrender control over their computing to someone else, but now there is another way to lose it: Service as a Software Substitute, or SaaSS, which means letting someone else’s server do your own computing activities. Both non-free software and SaaSS can spy on the user, shackle the user, and even attack the user."
are you sure you want to drive this car ?
Public
You are done driving your bicycle, as you have successfully completed your race car driving school.
You decide that it is time to buy a car and put your training to use, driving people around, to feed your family, pay your student loans, mortgage etc …
You go to the only car dealerships available, all state owned dealerships, and you have no choice as they have a state sanctioned monopoly.

Public
Vancouver, BC - June 4, 2012 - Z. Essak
Four years after the controversy arose from the BC Medical Association Board meeting of February 2008 and communications of the BCMA President alleged to be defamatory the matter was heard at Trial in the BC Supreme Court in Vancouver.
The Trial began on January 23, 2012 and though originally scheduled for twenty days was extended for an additional week with a total of twenty-four days of hearings. The Trial hearings ended on February 24, 2012 and the Court reserved Judgment. The Court decision may be released anytime in the next several months.
The Court is to consider not only whether the actions were defamatory but also if there was malice and breach of contract.
Health issues for adults born with cerebral palsy
Public
What happens to children born with cerebral palsy when they become adults?
In one case an individual born with cerebral palsy when they were an adult in their early 30’s had progressive deterioration of function involving their affected upper limb.
The individual was reviewed by their orthopedic surgeon who suggested botox injections for spasms and possibly some cosmetic improvement to the upper extremity although not optimistic for functional improvement.
Disagreement is central to progress

It's never too late to change the world !
In this TED talks video Margaret Heffernan demonstrates "that disagreement is central to progress, that the best partners aren't echo chambers and how great businesses allow people to disagree".

Trial begins in Wang v BC Medical Association and named individuals
Public
Vancouver BC - January 29, 2012.
Z. Essak, MD
Almost four years after a dispute erupted between Dr Caroline Wang and other directors of the BC Medical Association at the Board meeting of February 1 and 2, 2008 the matter is now being heard at Trial in the BC Supreme Court.
The Trial, which is a civil matter not a criminal one, began on Monday January 23, 2012. It is scheduled to proceed for twenty days until February 17, 2012. The location is room 43 of the BC Supreme Court, 800 Smithe Street, Vancouver, BC. The Honourable Mr. Justice Grauer presiding.
Now the Trial has begun it is a time to see and learn. How will the Court resolve this matter involving legal expenses likely to exceed $2 million? Will the outcome of the Trial affect the workings of the BC Medical Association? Will it more broadly affect the workings of other Societies incorporated in BC?
Mistakes were made (but not by me): Cognitive dissonance
Public
Mistakes were made (but not by me): Why we justify foolish beliefs, bad decisions, and hurtful acts... a book co-authored by Elliot Aronson.
Psychiatrists specialize in the ails of individuals. Social psychologists specialize in the ails of groups. The eminent social psychologist Elliot Aronson was interviewed in a CBC audio "podcast" available from the following site:
http://podcast.cbc.ca/mp3/ideas_20080428_5430.mp3
It is an interesting program from the CBC radio “Ideas” on the subject of cognitive dissonance. It offers some insight into how people can so badly misinterpret things to fit their preconceived notions and prejudices and become incapable of accepting any other view.
The program runs about 50 minutes and I suspect if people even listen to just the first 12 minutes they might find it sufficiently compelling to listen to the rest. (The MP3 file can be imported into iTunes or other music manager or burned to CD.)
